Black Women in Menopause


Nina and BWIM are part of the Educate Yourself Campaign: “Raising awareness about menopause”. Has spoken at the Kendal Mountain Festival raising awareness advocating for increased physical activity among midlife women.. She was invited to 10 Downing Street for Shattering the Silence about Menopause (Department for Work and Pensions). Nina has also contributed to the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) menopause and has spoken at the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Women and Work, as well as providing evidence to Parliament. These groups have been set up to tackle the lack of understanding around menopause in the public, amongst policymakers and employers.

Nina is involved in two research projects: the Menopause GAP Research project with the University of Warwick, focusing on the experiences of diverse ethnic and socio-economically underserved communities; and a collaboration with ChangeXtra at the University of Nottingham, exploring menopause, health inequalities, and digital health. She also presented an abstract for the 4M Conference 2024 at the University of Exeter, where delivered an oral presentation titled "Reshaping the Menopause Landscape."

Nina was part of the steering group committee for the Menopause Priority Setting Partnership (MAPS) with the James Lind Alliance. She currently serves as a National Committee member for the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) on the HS/1/3 Menstruation to Menopause and Menopause in the Workplace. Nina was also a lay committee member for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), I contributed to the updated menopause guidelines. She served as a committee member developing the CH/314/1 British Standards Institute (BSI) guide on Menstruation, Menstrual Health, and Menopause in the Workplace. This guide has established comprehensive standards promoting a supportive work environment for individuals experiencing menopause. The committee's dedication was recognised with the prestigious BSI award for the UK’s National Standards Body award. 

Nina has featured in The Guardian, Womens' Health Magazine, The Oldham Times,  Forbes magazine, Innovators And Entrepreneurs Changing The Narrative On Menopause, Stylist - Menopause treatment: why aren’t Black and Asian women more included in the menopause discourse? and has written numerous articles for example 'The colourless Menopause' for the voice and BACP - British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy.

Our founder Nina is a prominent voice in the media, speaking about perimenopause, menopause and beyond about her experiences as black woman.
